School Name: Churchill Community High School, La Ronge

Campaign Name: Northern Saskatchewan Student Eco-Conference

Campaign Description: We continued and expanded our environmental initiatives from previous years and looked at creating more involvement within the school and within the north. We invited schools from northern Saskatchewan to attend a two-day environmental conference hosted by Churchill Community High School in La Ronge, SK. Students and teachers attended workshops on solar power, composting, habitat conservation and invasive species, indoor and outdoor gardening, upcycling/repurposing, and water quality. As well, they were given tours of the local SARCAN and recycling depot. On the last day, students got together in their school groups and planned an environmental action plan to carry out in their home communities. They shared their ideas with each other, and we are developing a website to use as a platform for networking and communicating about our projects. We also received media exposure about the eco-conference.

Campaign Results: We had four schools participating in the eco-conference: Churchill Community High School in La Ronge, Minahik Waskahigan High School from Pinehouse, Hector Thiboutot Community School from Sandy Bay, and Dene High School from La Loche. We had twenty-eight high school students and seven teachers participating in the conference. Each of the four schools went back to their communities with projects that they would be carrying out. The students and teachers were engaged in the learning and enjoyed the eco-conference, saying they would come again if given the opportunity. We received media attention for our conference.
