Campaign Name: Project Sustainable Schools

Campaign Description: Four students in our class took on a leadership role within school to inform and inspire others. They were concerned that it didn’t seem as though students cared enough about the environment to do the “simple things” like recycling and powering down, so they took the initiative to bring their message, “It’s cool to be an eco-school,” to all of our classrooms and teachers. They did this by working with various classmates, teachers, and our extra-curricular Social Eco Action Club (S.E.A.C.) to plan and put on an “Eco Week” and Eco Fair for the first week of April which included a kick-off assembly, informational presentations in classrooms, daily announcements, games, conservation challenges, and displays by students from various classes. In addition to the Project Sustainable Schools (P.S.S.) campaign, as a whole class we have all committed to juice box recycling for the school, using natural light in the classroom as often as possible, bringing reusable containers in our lunches, and learning in a variety of subject areas about environmental issues and solutions.

Campaign Results:

  1. During eco week itself and especially the Eco Fair, there was a lot of enthusiasm and active participation – especially from our primary students – in all of the activities planned by the P.S.S. team and the S.E.A.C. members. They really did make “being green” COOL!
  2. Thanks to the “pledge challenge” and classroom informational presentations, we have noticed a significant change in
    a) the number of classrooms who consistently use natural lighting (or “lights half-off”),
    b) students’ ability to recognize what items can be recycled and then separate their recycling properly, and
    c) students bringing reusable lunch bags (16 were given out as prizes during eco week!) and containers
  3. As a result of how enthusiastic one of the P.S.S. members was about native plants (she’d written her own song and book!), there was a “spin off” presentation in our Kindergarten class and a connection to their learning about how we can make a difference in our communities
  4. In our classroom as a whole, because of the year-long focus on environmental stewardship, sustainability, and being more mindful about individual and collective actions (“ecological footprint”), several students have really internalized and personalized the messages and have made changes at home involving recycling, water use, and energy consumption.
